Since May 4, 2026, the street spaces on and around the historic square in downtown Gainesville have run on ParkGVL, a phone check-in system. The City soft-launched it on April 6 and made it mandatory a month later, according to its May 4 news release. The rules are simple once you see them in one place. If you’d rather have a deck picked for you based on your vehicle’s height and where you’re going, use our Where should I park? tool.
The rules in one box
- Scan the zone’s QR code and check in, even for a short stop.
- First 2 hours free, once per day. No payment method needed.
- After 2 hours: $4 an hour until 11 p.m.
- 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.: free.
- The three public decks: free 24/7, no check-in.
How do I check in to ParkGVL?
You don’t need to download anything. ParkGVL is a pay-by-mobile web app run by ParkDNA, and it opens in your phone’s browser. Explore Gainesville’s parking page and the City’s release describe the same steps:
- Find the ParkGVL sign for your block. Each zone is named on its sign, for example Spring3 on Spring Street or Main2 outside the Main Street deck.
- Scan the sign’s QR code with your phone camera.
- Enter your plate number, your state and how long you plan to stay.
- Add your cell number if you want a text before your time runs out. From that text you can extend the session wherever you are.
- If you’re staying two hours or less, skip the payment details. The City says you don’t need a payment method for the free session.
The free two hours only count if you’ve checked in. A car parked in a ParkGVL zone without a session can be ticketed, even if it has been there ten minutes.
What happens after two hours?
From the third hour on, street parking costs $4 an hour, and that rate runs until 11 p.m. From 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. the street is free. Worked through with real evenings, it looks like this:
- Lunch at noon, back at the car by 1:45: free.
- Check in at 6 p.m. for dinner, leave at 10: the first two hours are free and the last two are charged at $4 each.
- Arrive at 9 p.m.: your free two hours carry you to 11, when the overnight free period starts.
You get one free session per day, so moving the car to another zone won’t earn you a second free two hours. If you know you’ll be downtown longer than that, park in a deck. All three are free.
Where are the three free parking decks?
The City lists three public decks within walking distance of the square, all free and open 24/7, and ParkGVL doesn’t apply inside them. Check the clearance before you pull in with a roof box or a tall van. The heights come from Explore Gainesville; the space counts come from the City’s release.
| Deck | Address | Height clearance | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Street Parking Deck | 301 Main Street SW, Gainesville, GA 30501 | 8'6" | Free |
| Gainesville North Parking Deck | 100 Brenau Avenue NE, Gainesville, GA 30501 | 8'2" | Free |

- Main Street Parking Deck, 301 Main St. SW: 451 spaces and the most headroom, 8 ft 6 in. The first floor has 2-hour spaces that need no digital check-in. About 150 meters from the square in a straight line.
- Gainesville North Parking Deck, 100 Brenau Ave. NE: 410 spaces, 8 ft 2 in clearance, with designated parking for the Hall County Library across the way. About 180 meters from the square.
- Hall County Parking Facility, 225 Green St. SE: 271 spaces and the lowest clearance, 7 ft. The public entrance is on Spring Street only, so don’t circle Green Street looking for it. About 360 meters from the square.
A few event pages give the North deck’s address as 130 Main St. The City’s parking release uses 100 Brenau Ave. NE, and so do we.
Which streets does ParkGVL cover?
The City estimates ParkGVL covers about 15 percent of downtown’s public parking. It runs on these eight stretches:
- Bradford Street, between Spring and Academy streets
- Brenau Avenue, between Bradford and Green streets
- Broad Street, between West Academy and Main streets
- Green Street, between Washington Street and Brenau Avenue
- Main Street, between Academy Street and Jesse Jewell Parkway
- Maple Street, between West Academy and Broad streets
- Spring Street, between West Academy and Bradford streets
- Washington Street, between Maple Street and E.E. Butler Parkway
It doesn’t cover the decks, marked loading zones or accessible spaces. Loading zones follow their own rules: there are timed 15- and 20-minute spots plus untimed yellow-curb zones, SafetySticks monitors them, and tickets for misuse arrive by mail. Private paid lots downtown are run independently, usually by pay-by-text or an app. They aren’t City lots, so read the sign at the entrance.
Who enforces ParkGVL, and what if I get a ticket?
Gainesville Police enforce it, and the City’s Downtown Security Ambassadors also watch downtown parking areas. At launch the City said first-offense citations would be more forgiving while drivers got used to the system. City-issued tickets are paid through Gainesville Municipal Court.
Where is accessible parking near the square?
The Main Street and Gainesville North decks each have nine accessible spaces. The Hall County facility has accessible spots too, but the City hasn’t published how many. Accessible street spaces sit outside ParkGVL, so there’s nothing to check in. For concerts on the square, the First Friday concert page points to the Main Street deck and also lists the North deck.
When do the streets close for events this fall?
On big event days the street spaces disappear hours before anything starts, and the free decks do the work. Three dates are coming up, each taken from the organizer’s own page:
- Trick or Treat on the Square, Friday, Oct. 30: parking around the square closes at noon and roads close at 1 p.m. The event runs 3 to 6 p.m., and all three decks are free.
- Jingle Mingle and the Lighting of the Chicken, Saturday, Nov. 21 (tentative timeline): parking on Main and Bradford on the square, on Brenau Avenue, on Green Street and on parts of Spring Street closes at 5 a.m. Parking across the whole event area closes at noon. Main and Bradford close to traffic at 1 p.m., and all roads close at 2 p.m.
- Christmas on Green Street, Sunday, Dec. 6 (tentative): street closures begin at noon, and roads reopen around 7 p.m. or once they’re cleared.
